From 28 to 29 October, 2020, the German-Russian Scientific online Seminar “Ecologically Pure and Comfortable Urban Environment in Conditions of Climate Change”. The Seminar focused on the engineering solutions to mitigating the effects of climate change in the urban environment. This Seminar was held as a part of the Russian-German Year of Scientific and Educational Partnership 2018-2020 and also as a part of the Year of Germany in Russia 2020-2021. The event was organized by the National Research Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU), KNAUF Gips KG and the German Centre for Research and Innovation (DWIH) in Moscow.

Acting rector of MGSU Pavel Akimov and the director of DWIH in Moscow Andreas Hoeschen gave their speeches at the opening of the seminar. In his speech Pavel Akimov noted the utmost importance of the event for the development of the Russian-German scientific cooperation and expressed his gratitude to the German Centre for Research and Innovation in Moscow, a long-time partner of MGSU, for its valuable assistance in organizing the event. In turn, Andreas Hoeschen expressed his confidence in further successful cooperation with Russian colleagues and noted that joint efforts are crucial to meeting the challenges that society faces.

On the first day of the Seminar was moderated by associate professor of the Department of Water Supply and Water Removal of MGSU Elena Gogina. The Honorary President of MGSU Valery Telichenko, the representatives of the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) Susanne Bieker and Markus Fritz, as well as the professor of the National Research Institute of Building Physics Nina Umnjakova gave their key presentations on the topic “Air and Water of the Modern City in Conditions of Climate Change".

On the second day, the topic of which was “Building Materials for Comfortable Living Environment in the City”, the Head of KNAUF Group Eastern Europe and CIS Janis Kraulis addressed the audience with a speech, in which he noted the importance of cooperation between academic science and production for improving the quaility of training of new specialists in the field of construction and engineering. For more than 80 years KNAUF has cooperated with researchers from different countries in developing and using ecologically pure building materials to create a comfortable urban environment as well as in training highly qualified specialists in the field of construction and engineering. The presentations were given by the representatives of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Leibniz Institute of Ecological and Urban Development, Technical University of Munich, as well as the Head of Product Management of KNAUF Group Eastern Europe and CIS.

Geography of the participants from Russia was notably wide. Many scientists and specialists from universities and research institutes of Belgorod, Chelyabinsk, Vladivostok, Saint Petersburg and Moscow took part in the Seminar. The German side was represented by scientists and specialists from Munich, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Weimar and Heidelberg.

More than 300 people from Russia, Germany, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan showed their interest in the event. The interactive format of the Seminar gave the participants an opportunity to ask their questions to the speakers and take part in special surveys.
